Greater LI Running Club Donates to Police Family in Need

Suffolk County Police Officer Eric Dorfman and his family have had a very rough time of it lately, and the Greater Long Island Running Club and David Lerner Associates were very happy to be able to help them out with a $2500 check from their joint Police Crisis Fund. The Fund is 100 % financed by the annual David Lerner Associates Police Appreciation 5K Run, which this year will be held at Eisenhower Park on Thursday evening, June 3rd.

Officer Dorfman’s 2 year old daughter Kennedy was taken to her pediatrician in October for the usual healthy checkup. Her blood work showed an abnormal platelet count, and Eric and his wife Aly got the call that no parents should ever have to get – a referral to Pediatric Oncology. After weeks and weeks of testing it was determined that Kennedy had Alpha-1 Antitryspin deficiency, that her liver was failing, and that she would require a liver transplant.

Kennedy’s Aunt Kelly proved to be a perfect match with Kennedy, and the transplant was successfully done in early March. Kennedy’s recovery and rehabilitation will take considerable time, and she will need to take multiple transplant anti-rejection medications for the rest of her life. Although both Kennedy’s mom and dad have good health insurance plans, the non-covered costs associated with childhood transplants are huge, and the Club and David Lerner Associates were happy to be able to do their part in the fundraising effort to help cover them.
