Colleges Hit by Coronavirus

The global pandemic has devastated students' plans for higher education and uprooted college plans across the board. A year in and we are still not out of the woods yet. In fact, it seems there may be more darkness before the light. The new strains of the virus have raised significant concerns given the fact that they spread faster especially in places like college dorms. In particular, the U.K. variant is thought to be spreading so fast that experts think it may soon be the dominant strain within the U.S.

New more virile variants have been found all across the nation. Students in California, Florida, Texas, and Louisiana have all reported coming into contact with the B.1.1.7 variant. In Michigan, The University of Michigan discovered an entire cluster of people who tested positive for the new variant in its athletic department! This outbreak caused over 1,000 cases already this year.

Going to college should be an enjoyable and challenging experience that propels you to a new level in life and career. It should not be a stressful and possibly deadly undertaking.

Over 1,000 cases at each school were reported by at least 85 colleges across the country. That is a sobering statistic. However, if you drill even further down into the data we find that more than 680 campuses had at least 100 cases! It's like Russian Roulette you never know where it will rear its head, but you know it’s out there.

While many Universities are holding online classes rather than having students return to in-person teaching, the University of Florida will be returning to holding actual classes after holding most classes online in the fall. The school is planning to test all students taking in-person classes twice a week. Testing is a key point for campuses to try and provide some sort of safety protocol, however, the cost of testing is proving to be extreme as you have to keep testing both staff and students constantly. Some campuses have taken to testing wastewater from dorms to see if any traces of Covid are in it which would, in turn, require testing of the dorms occupants.

Many thought that 2021 would be a return to normal for colleges and universities across The United States and a large number of people postponed their college experience last year hoping to be able to fully enjoy the College experience in 2021. However, it appears it will be at least another year until things are able to achieve any sense of normalcy.
