Gender Gap in Retirement

There is no disputing the fact that men and women approach things differently. According to a recent study, however, there are many ways that men and women approach retirement differently, including the fact that men apparently find the transition into retirement a lot smoother.

Emotion is another major difference in the process. Men generally feel an excitement for their “extended vacation” and working on their golf game, whereas women, being more practical, tend to focus their thoughts on the unknowns inherent in this change of lifestyle.

This practical thought process is even more apparent when you consider the study that showed almost 60% of women had given serious thought to their retirement, as opposed to only 45% of men.

How time is spent is another major difference. Men generally have expectations of spending time playing golf, fishing, and enjoying “me” time, whereas women report mostly that they expect to be spending time with or caring for family members.

This phenomenon reaches far earlier than the actual retirement party, most notably in the way that men and women approach investing for retirement. Women are more likely to invest conservatively, with more than half saying that they aren’t willing to take risks with their money, but men are quite aggressive in comparison.
