Marriage: A Real Investment

For today’s generation who are entering adulthood, getting married is not as normal as it once was. In the 1960s, 75% of American adults were married, whereas today we find that only half of the population in the United States are getting hitched

Perhaps it is the financial crisis as well as the recession that is making people think twice about whether love is enough. 78% of women who may be open to looking for a spouse feel that having a partner with a steady job would be very important to them. Having two incomes at best or at least having a partner who can take care of the bills and help provide enough to have a safe home and space to raise a family is a focus.

Since 1990, manufacturing jobs in the United States have dropped dramatically, and that in turn has had an impact on the men that fall into a marriageable age bracket. Manufacturing jobs had solid paychecks, and the men worked side by side in factories doing both skilled and manual jobs that demanded a lot of the individual. This created a solidarity and brotherhood that is now sorely lacking in the fabric of modern America. Basically, the men that are out there are not such great marriage material for today’s modern women.

Marriage is something that can be truly beautiful. It is unfortunate that money has to come into the equation at all, but the raw facts are that to have a roof over your head and food on the table, you have to either be an incredibly skilled barterer and own a farm that is self-sufficient with no mortgage, or you will have to deal with money at some point. And to get money, most people get some sort of job. It is sad that many possible couples will never get together due to financial woes or instability, but the truth is that if the men and women out there take charge and change their financial situations, then marriage might just take off again along with the economy.
