Older Americans Month in May

As we are all painfully aware, the last few months have been incredibly trying for us all. As we move into May, and we see the aftermath of what February and March left in their wake, it is time to think about our older Americans.

Every May the Administration for Community Living (ACL) leads the national observance of Older Americans Month, but this year due to the coronavirus many older Americans will be at home.

Each year they set a theme, and this year the theme is “Make Your Mark.” This theme celebrates the countless ways that older adults make our communities better. This year’s theme highlights the difference everyone can make in the lives of older adults, in support of caregivers, and to strengthen communities. Making sure that our older Americans are taken care of and their needs are being met during this incredibly challenging time is something that should be at the forefront of our minds in May.

There is a larger number of older Americans than you may think. In fact, for the first time in history, people aged 65 and older outnumber children under the age of 5. Experts estimate that between now and 2050, the population that is 65 and older will more than double while the population under 20 years of age will see almost no growth.

Our elders are not only valuable humans (for several reasons — life experience being one of them), but they prop up the economy in many ways too. Research shows that the household wealth of your average older American family is much higher than if you compare it to the same type of family and age group from a quarter-century ago. The median inflation-adjusted net worth of a family headed by someone aged 62 or older was 52 percent greater in 2016 than in 1989.

So, take the time to check in on someone from your family or someone you know that is an older American this month. Their life experience and talents benefit families, peers, and neighbors every day.

Many of them won’t be leaving the house and will be isolated due to the health implications of the coronavirus, but just because you won’t see many older folks out and about doesn’t mean they aren’t there.

Make your mark, and show you care by doing something special for an older American this month. A kind word or deed goes a long way in today's troubled world.
